Principal's Message

Message from the Principal

We have been in the Los Angeles Community for close to 100 years and we are excited that you are joining us. At Abram Friedman Occupational Center, you will find courses for Learning English as a Second Language, preparing for the High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Test, and Career Technical Education classes, Citizenship, and Sign Language for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Classes are conveniently offered in the day or evening, at little or no cost. Whatever you decide to take, you will become part of the long-standing tradition of AFOC student success.
The world and local climates are changing. However, schools are steadfastly holding on to commonly held principles. Safety is our number one concern. AFOC is committed to the belief that every person has the right to public education. We support diversity, knowing that different student backgrounds enrich our learning and experience. All students and employees are protected from discrimination based on their actual or perceived race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, age, marital status, family/parental status, income derived from a public assistance program, and political beliefs. We also believe in a growth mindset: all students will become effective communicators who demonstrate accurate expression, clear and concise speaking and writing abilities, and active listening skills; responsible global citizens who utilize 21 Century Skills, to navigate life, the workplace, or higher education, and resourceful individuals who demonstrate punctuality, consistent attendance and quality work both independently and collaboratively.
Moreover, we are fortunate to have such great community partners who complement instruction with resources, such as mental health and job search just to name a few. Once again, welcome to AFOC. We encourage you to be active participant in the classroom. For additional help or concerns, feel free to visit the main office and speak to a counselor or administrator. Together we are stronger.

Francisco Nunez got his citizenship!

Francisco Nunez, a student from Mr. Trujillo’s Mid-City citizenship class on Saturday, passed his naturalization interview last Thursday and took the oath on the same day to become a United States citizen. He visited Mr. Trujillo’s class today with donuts and appreciation for Mr. Trujillo: “Other teachers have you memorize the questions, but Mr. Trujillo teaches you the questions so it stays in your mind. I learned what this country is about and now I know more about this country than my native country. The history of this country is amazing. I am going to learn more about this country.
